Hey Mary,As we begin this month of gratitude, I want to celebrate something new and exciting on the SBD home front, it’s the rebranding to live up to the new website launch, of course. Plus we are officially Green Certified by the state of California.I am very grateful for the continued support of everyone who reaches out to tell me how much they like the new website and love what I am doing here. More about that later. For now, I want to share with you that Artistic License was last weekend! It was an honor and a privilege to be included among so many fine artists and craftsmen. Nov. 4 and 5 at the Muckenthaler Mansion in Fullerton. Although, I really tried to find a way to attend after… |
I fell down the stairs into my garage on Thursday. Getting ready for the event by dying the ubiquitous flour sack bags with logos from every business imaginable. A little upcycle hack. The ankle was hit just right to break three bones, the tibia, fibula and the malleolus surface called the astragalus for all you biologist out there. I never started the dye bath. Yeah, a lot changed that morning, so all the events happening in November … not yet sure what’s going to happen. |
Meanwhile, two days after surgery I am able to share a new how to make a denim skirt with you. See below. |
Since it is that busy time of year we were only having one Workshop making your own upcycle clothing, but they are popular so we will be having more at least twice a month next year. |
More unofficial gatherings are the Craft days starting the first week of December. These are for anyone needing a fun time to produce stocking stuffers such as collaged little boxes. |
On the Nineteenth of November we hope to be at the Lab in Costa Mesa with my favorite ECO Now store where my pieces are not in that particular store but are at the Anaheim location. Speaking of fun gifts, just setting aside some time to take a friend for the experience of checking out what a zero waste store has to offer would be a nice gift. |
Last but definitely not least is Claremont Farmers Market on the Thanksgiving weekend Nov. 26. It has been too long. With the schedule change from working the first Sunday of the month instead of the last, means it has been awhile. We will have a Sale for that Black Friday weekend. |
Which brings me to Green Tuesday, what the heck is that? It should only be called Giving Tuesday but now everyday is green standing for money. My interest was piqued by the name thinking it had something to do with the environment, well it doesn’t. So find a good charity, check this list out, or give a gift of time. |
But here at SBD I would like to start an idea for Green Tuesday for going on an Outdoor Experience to share with loved ones besides giving which is so important. See Forty Experiences to give this year during the holidays from one of my favorite Sustainable Fashion Bloggers, ImperfectIdealist.com |
So websites, as it turns out, are a creative outlet or so I am learning. But not to rank with google is like heresy. The SEO police want the Search Engine Optimization to work really well which is the next step to build an audience. That means that every page has to relate to another page and explain what your business or site is all about, also for the sight and hearing impaired. |
Since I built the whole thing myself with the help of a really good Tonic template and Showit host browser, just techie details, I did not always adhere to those rules and found myself putting stuff on there that I had always wanted to show. |
Such as, my new found activism in the fashion industry, and all of time DIY decor. My love of people in general. And of course the many ideas originating in upcycle fashion. I am making a new Freebie (marketing talk referring to a give away to build your audience) with about twenty visuals you can click on to see how to make your own. Or, the go to the Ready to Wear tab on the site has already-made options. We also have Made to order custom clothes right here from the website. |
This is such a fun time of year and unless you are super chill, a frenzy of emotions, or activities to overwhelm are inevitable, take time to meditate and pray often. |
Salad Bowl DressHappy Halloween month!October 1st is tomorrow. The weather is acting weird, as if it is getting colder earlier. I am looking forward to the cooler weather, though. We had some nice events last week. The Mother Earth Market was fantastic. Any day that starts with Yoga and a Reggae singer MsRoyal jamming all day was so pleasant. People were sharing their passion for saving the planet locally and worldly with biodegradable products and generally high-quality products or vintage. It was a paperless and plastic-free day, which in small ways, makes one do things differently, which is contagious. Listen to a talk by Thea of Eco Now here on SBD YouTube. The other event was with The League of Women Voters, a group that learns about the issues. Policy is what is going to save fashion, and it is what is going to make all our lives better in the short and long run.The other news I want to share is that I wear this vests every day, which makes people stop and compliment me. This one is a tunic vest that looks good and wearable or functional. It is here; we will make one to order if purchased from the website.Salad Bowl Dress will be at Claremont tomorrow, Oct 1, and Oct 29, 2023. We have lots of new vests, wide-brimmed hats, and dresses. We are doing a lot of new work building up to the Artistic License two-day fair at the Muckenthaler Mansion in Fullerton on Nov. 3 and 4. Although the whole thing is growing, I will have the exact location as the last two years. I wish everyone well and safe this holiday Halloween season—one of my favorites. I will make a human salad bowl costume and a few other Dia de los Muertos projects. The Barbie craze is still going strong, prompting me to share some of my memorabilia one day.Another book to check out by my son and myself, my mother’s career in art, is available on Amazon. Fay Colmar Retrospective: A Collection of her Work as an Artist. The website is still not formally launched, but soon it will be. You may still check it out. A work in progress.XO, Mary |
The Salad Bowl Dress website is better if you want to check it out.
It feels like the first day of the rest of the year. Fall is almost here. That means we can layer our clothes. Add something a little more preppy. A blouse and a vest could be available. saladbowldress.com/shop I am trying to decide if that should be the home page, any thoughts?
The latest hot seller is this skirt. It won’t last tomorrow, Sept. 3rd, at the Claremont Farmers and Artisanal Market. The next time I’m at Claremont is Oct. 1st, and THEN I switch to the last Sundays of the month.
The Sleeve Insert Skirt |
The Mother Earth Market is having its third year on Sept. 23 at the Anaheim Packing House. A lot of fun activities are going on that day, Yoga classes, speakers, and a clothing swap, see the link for more info.
My niece just finished writing another book with a collaborator who wrote the Spanish part. Teaching children about gardening, specifically seeds as the growth point, is fabulous. Very adorable and inspirational. The Kickstarter link above.
My group, Remake, is working hard to improve the Fashion Industry. Last week, there was a panel discussion on how to make it more of a circular economy than a linear one. Fascinating stuff.
A blog about the circular economy in fashion will be posted soon. But this new blog is available now about organizing your closet to get closer to upcycling.

Newsletter August 2023
The Salad Bowl Dress website is under construction.
As I write this, the temperature is heading to 95 degrees. It is August in one of the hottest years on record. We are all adapting, which is such a healthy human trait.
Despite the heat, I will attend the Farmers Market in Claremont on Sunday, August 6. It happens to be my late father’s birthday.
He died young, at 63. To me, he seemed so alive until the end. We gathered around his in-home hospital bed to joke with his third wife. I was always proud to introduce him to my friends even then.
He was always inquisitive and polite to anyone I brought around. He once talked to my Iranian dorm roommate for three hours. There was always something new to learn about him. He was the classic case of us discovering who he was when my siblings and I went through all his stuff after he died.
My father was a salesman. Where did I get it from? As a kid, I sometimes didn’t believe what he said because there was a BS factor about him. After he died, we saw proof that he went to Columbia, studied astronomy, enjoyed magic, traveled the world, and joined the Navy as a 17-year-old in 1945, lying about his age. His legacy lives on with heart disease for two out of three brothers.
At present, my website is coming along. It is super exciting, and I am enjoying building it myself. There might be a formal launch to lure people in to see it.
I can see teaching Business and website-building courses in the future.
The Mother Earth Market is again at the Anaheim Packing District on September 23.
Salad Bowl Dress will launch a course on simple updates for your wardrobe this month!
This Fall, I will give a talk about Fashion and Climate Change for the League of Women Voters for their open enrollment luncheon.
Mark your calendars for the Artistic License event at the beautiful Muckenthaler of Artisans from all over the county on Nov. 3rd and 4th weekend.
Stay calm, drink lots of water, and swim somewhere.
Please check out the SaladBowDress.com website still under construction.

I love these! If you are wondering which fanny pack to buy this Summer, Emily Plus Five fanny pack at Eco Now is the sleeper item. Hand made with leftover fabric (I noticed she used a flowered fabric scrap from Italy that I used for a recliner slipcover, a long time ago) and made with recycled seat belts is the best!
Fanny Packs by Emily Plus Five for Eco Now store |
Wink, wink my Salad Bowl Dress vests are also selling at their two Eco Now stores in Anaheim and Laguna.
Alas, tomorrow is the Farmers Market at Claremont. New dates are the first weekend of the month with a few other dates, July 23 for one. Maybe there will be a show on July 22 …?
A few weekends ago I attended the Craft+Commerce conference in Boise, Idaho for Professional Digital Creators. It was hosted by ConvertKit, an email provider who has a damn good learn button on their site for monetizing your work of any kind. BTW, some of these links are affiliates if you click on them I make money but at no extra cost to you.
The company itself has many innovative ideas for creators to succeed in this competitive world and believe the world belongs to creators. We all have something to offer, is a nice message. I recommend going next year if you are a professional creator?
Nevertheless we were greeted with the utmost kindness and generosity, learned a lot about all our potential and made new friends.
Boise is a very underrated city too. Where Californians are moving in droves.
Not sure if we were professional creators? I only have a website, more on that later, a course, plus two more otw teaching how to Upcycle your own clothes, and a blog about DIY Decor and Sustainable Fashion topics.
Jim, My husband has authored books, made videos for teaching art, and worked as a Visual Artist/Educator his whole adult life. Although he is interested in making more of a splash online his job title is Artist/Educator not Content Creator. If you are like him maybe we can meet up for strategies? I have learned so much! That business and marketing feels second nature.
There will be no boasting of new dresses or t-shirts although I have some. Most of these few weeks have been about making a new website! Launch date coming soon!
As summer is coming obvious little things you can do to update your wardrobe with clothes you already own, please reply here to any desires you have for your wardrobe?
Many of you know that I am from NYC sort of. I lived there for twenty years, met my husband there, had my three kids there living in Artist Housing in a cute little neighborhood of Red Hook, Brooklyn.
Alas we went back for a visit all together last month for the first time in twenty years. It was almost like we never left seeing many of the same friends but NYC has changed. There are no more Indian restaurants on 6th street.
It is still super fun and if you are planning a trip let me know so I can make some recommendations. I used to give out the container port tour guide.
LMK if you want to get the scoop on a NYC visit, ideas leaning towards ferry rides rather than bike rides this time around.

Hello
This is the day Salad Bowl Dress is in big demand because we are saving the planet one little garment at a time. Originally the clothing or fabric I use has been sitting in someone’s closet forever and might eventually end up in a landfill. We all know landfills are at full capacity. There really isn’t anywhere for goods to go.
The ECO NOW is a zero-waste store where my upcycle vests have been selling for the last few months. (they are also having Earth Day events at The Camp)
Also, The Remix Market is having a Grand Opening EARTH DAY celebration tomorrow in the city of Orange in the late afternoon. We will be there with racks of upcycle clothing! Hope to see you there!
I highly recommend getting on their Instagram feed where they sell all kinds of stuff used from furniture, and kitchen accessories to clothes for great prices.
Every year on Earth Day I collect trash as a little gesture to clean up our hiking trails. REI has bags and gloves to give away through the CA Nature conservancy. It is a great place to volunteer for the whole family! Plus, getting many fun perks for your efforts like free lunch or campsites.
THIS SUNDAY IS CLAREMONT! Celebrating the Golden Streets Heart of the Foot Hills Bicycle Festival !!! We will be at our usual Claremont Farmers and Artisanal Market from 8- 4
The Bicycle Vest will be featured:

The luck of being able to do what I love. Speaking of luck, St Paddy’s Day, this Friday, March 17, is a Mother Earth Market at the Camp in Costa Mesa and SaladBowl Dress will be there from 10-3. There’s a clothing swap, live music, and a facial-making class too.
More good luck, my mother Fay turned 93 in February while living with us.
I have more online sales than ever, thanks to all of you. A new store ReMIx Market in Orange will be added to my other two EcoNow stores in Anaheim and the Laguna Beach store celebrated its Grand Opening.
Thinking about how lucky for Women’s History month and before that Black History month and all the brave people that have come before us paving the way for civil rights and equality. GROUNDBREAKING GIRLS: ALLISON ADAMS at the Muckenthaler in Fullerton is a show of trailblazing women portraits until March 31.
The vernal equinox is close. Daylight savings is here. I think we can all agree this winter in Southern California is more than we are prepared to handle. All I hear are friends saying they long for the day, always any day, we can complain that it is too hot.
We have learned of unbearable circumstances during a time when snow becomes a conflict of interest. The Sierra gets record snow the year my two young adults are living up there.
Claremont is close enough to the mountains that many of my customers come down from the mountain to shop. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Missing being at the Claremont Farmers Market more than once a month. March 26 is the next day.
Check out this Grand Opening:The ReMix store is using its business of JunkLuggers to sell furniture and upcycle clothing. Their Grand Opening is on Earth Day coming up on April 23. I will be there selling SaladBowlDress.

Today is Friday the 13th and so far nothing went wrong, the day couldn’t be more aligned with the universe. Family is in town and we’re dancing to the sound of the flutes of Costa Rica. The Day of Regeneration event is tomorrow at the Eco Now store in Laguna from 12 to 2.
Now more than ever is a time to regenerate our minds, body and the earth. Regenerate Your Reality and Salad Bowl Dress will join Eco Now at their Laguna Beach “a day to regenerate.” Bring your seeds, cuttings or seedlings to share, and containers to refill home & body products at Eco Now. All attendees will receive 10% off refills
Participants will learn about regeneration, circular economies, zero waste practices, composting, ethical fashion, and conscious consumption. We will exchange seeds and ideas to promote thoughtful consumerism and learn about biodiversity. Seeds are important to understand and preserve!
About Eco Now
“be eco now, not eco later” eco-nnect with us! Our mission is to help consumers make sustainable choices. At Eco Now, we strive to educate others and provide locally sourced, handmade, and eco-friendly goods to reduce waste.

Oh, the July month is upon us, which translates to real Summer is here!
The Fourth of July is full of bunting and barbecues. Last year we were in the small town of Bridgeport, CA where the Fourth of July parade has been going on since 1862. For California that is a long time!
I wanted to join in the festivities with some Bunting hanging from our balcony. Instead of buying some I had to make some so here is my how-to for how I made it:
I bought 15 yards of Sunbrella fabric.
I looked at pictures and realized it was really just math and draping. A lot of box pleat folds in on itself to hang puffy.
Voila!
One logistics fact: Here at the SaladBowlDress workshop, is it’s pretty impossible for me to receive packages or mail since the building added a chain link fence around the premesses. Please Call or email for where to send deliveries. We are working on a new mailing address.
There is a new blog called The Vest.
If you are still wondering what all the fuss is about fashion read The Truth About Fashion and Climate Change blog as it is still relevant. Although the power point in the blog is getting longer and the new lectures (talks are getting shorter) .
The website is meant to have a shop that makes any vest by simply adding a few measurements or by choosing a size on the product. Feel free to make your desires known with the form, contact page, or email.
Next we are having an UPCYCLE workshop on July 7 for three hours from 11am – 2pm of planning, cutting, and sewing upcycle. Bring your clothes to remake and see how many new pieces we can create?
I really believe in progress, that good prevails, truthfulness prevails, freedom is in the form of being an individual without succumbing to pressure from institutions or self. Being who you want to be is all important without judgment. Know that our surroundings work with generosity and kindness over greed and destruction much better.
This week at Claremont I made many more mens vests and large sizes, to balance all the recent extra smalls. Please stop by to check out all the one of a kind creations July 3rd.
Mens vests have become quite the obsession. They’re not as labor intensive hence more affordable. The best place to see the new ones are on instagram@saladbowldress.
And, My Pinterest is getting more popular too. I am getting lots of my pins saved. Pinterest is the one social media platform that does not require likes and is full of ideas. Please feel inspired to check it out. @saladbowldress
Have a safe and fun 4th of July!
Yours,
XO Mary
